Hibernation is one of nature's greatest miracles, allowing animals to sleep through periods of extreme cold (and heat). From the tundra to the desert, this ability enables animals to live in some of Earth's harshest climates. Full-color photographs and vivid text combine to give children a view of the many different ways that animals "sleep it off." Highlights include:

  • how an animal's body uses fat to survive and even wake itself up
  • how an animal finds and prepares its den for hibernation
  • animals that estivate, or hibernate to escape heat
  • animals that give birth and care for their young during hibernation

PreS-Gr 1-These titles resemble sections of a textbook, focusing on one concept and offering several approaches to it. In Comparing Fractions, the proverbial pizza is one example used to solve a problem and for sharing. Other examples include peppers, corn, tomatoes, radishes, and eggs. On each spread, an activity is suggested to reinforce the concept. In the second title, the basic idea of sets is introduced through familiar objects: clothing, toys, kitchen items, and body parts. The activities encourage children to search through their homes for sets and make comparisons. Photographs and graphics fill the pages and illustrate the explanations. These are bright, appealing choices for homeschoolers or parents who want to work with their primary-grade children on math concepts.-Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI
