Gr 7 Up-Figuring out what it takes to become a hero seems easier read than done in this manga based on the light novel by Aneko Yusagi. An entertaining adventure awaits Naofumi Iwantani as he is transported from a library book to a world strangely similar to that of a virtual role-playing game. It has been foretold that legendary heroes would rise up and save this world from monsters, which have wreaked havoc throughout the lands. Iwantani learns he is one of four legendary heroes, and the least popular at that. He meets an unlikely ally and strengthens his resolve to see this game through until the end. Fans of role-playing video games will find this fictional world fascinating. The rules of the game our legendary hero finds himself in are explained in an easy-to-read format. There are a series of plot questions left unanswered that will hopefully be resolved in subsequent volumes. Readers will not need any prior experience in understanding role-playing games to be able to enjoy this book. The detailed illustrations are gorgeously drawn and complement this intricate fantasy world. The art is detailed in black, white, and gray hues, which lead into expressive world-building and characterization. VERDICT Recommended for fans of "Sword Art Online," "Accel World," or "Log Horizon."-Jessica Bratt, Grand Rapids Public Library, Grand Rapids, MI
