Did Inspector Green put the wrong man behind bars?
Twenty years ago, a raw and impressionable Detective Michael Green helped convict a young professor for the murder of an attractive co-ed. From behind bars, the man continued to hound Green with letters protesting his innocence. Shortly after being paroled, he is found dead. Is it suicide? Revenge? Or had Green made the biggest mistake of his career — a mistake which cost an innocent man his liberty and ultimately his life? To determine the truth, Green is forced to re-examine old evidence and open up old wounds to stare down a far greater evil hiding in plain sight.

This is the tenth book in Fradkin's Inspector Green series, two of which have won the Arthur Ellis Best Novel Award. The book opens with Michael Green receiving a letter from James Rosten who is about to be released after 20 years in prison. A college professor convicted of murdering of a young coed, he has always maintained his innocent. Green made his reputation and received early promotions as a result of his role in convicting Rosten. Shortly after Rosten is paroled, he is found dead in his cottage of an apparent suicide in the area where the murder of Jackie Carmichael took place. In the course of Green's investigation, he uncovers evidence that this was not a suicide and begins to question the evidence that led to Rosten's conviction. Fradkin has skillfully drawn various multi-dimensional characters whose connections to each other and the crime go back many years. All of them are suspects in one or both of the murders and the arson of the Carmichael house. In this suspenseful and engaging addition to the series, Green is drawn back into the original case in order to determine who the murderer really was and who is responsible for Rosten's death.
