Lord Maxim Randall comes back from the war to find that he has a beautiful, strong-willed new neighbor, Eve. A widow with a young child, Eve isn't ready to let anyone in, but she slowly falls for Maxim. Unfortunately, he made a bet about winning her love, and when she discovers this, Eve loses all trust in men--especially in her blossoming love with Maxim. In this Regency romance, Dickson (Conveniently Wed to a Spy) creates a beautiful, character-driven story vaguely reminiscent of 10 Things I Hate About You and The Taming of the Shrew. VERDICT Fans of '90s rom-coms and Shakespeare adaptations will adore this historical romance.--Ahliah Bratzler
