The first in the "Hawai'i CI" series from professional criminologist and mystery novelist Flowers (Chasing the Violet Killer) takes place on the Big Island of Hawai'i and features a racially diverse cast of characters. Logan Ryder, a Hawai'i PD detective, is investigating a suspected serial killer when his chief encourages him to go to grief counseling after his police partner was gunned down in front of him. Logan and Elena Kekona, the counselor, quickly become interested in each other. However, they begin to fear for Elena's safety when Logan points out that she resembles the other victims, but Logan will do everything he can to protect her. VERDICT Unfortunately, this series launch doesn't stand out.--Mary Frances Cely
