Los Angeles, 1986.

A group of right-wing Christians has put an initiative on the November ballot to allow health officials to force people with HIV into quarantine camps—and it looks like it's going to pass. Rios, now living in LA, agrees to be counsel for a group of young activists who call themselves QUEER [Queers United to End Erasure and Repression]. QUEER claims to be committed to peaceful civil disobedience. But when one of its members is implicated in the bombing of an evangelical church that kills its pastor, who publicly supported the quarantine initiative, Rios finds himself with a client suddenly facing the death penalty.

Nava's signature character, gay Mexican American criminal-defense lawyer Henry Rios, returns in another captivating crime novel. This time it's 1986, the height of the AIDS epidemic in California; an initiative that would quarantine HIV-positive persons and those with AIDS is on the ballot. Henry finds himself on a related case, representing a young HIV-positive man named Theo, a speed freak, who is accused of bombing a church that supports the initiative. The pastor of the church was killed in the blast. Theo claims that a man named Freddy, with whom he is obsessed, actually made the bombs and that he, Theo, only placed them, not knowing the pastor was in the building. But Freddy has vanished--does he even exist? In the meantime Henry has met Josh, a young man who knows Theo, and Josh and Henry fall in love. The plot of Nava's latest is intriguingly complicated, and Henry, of course, remains a great character. If the denouement is a bit too tidy, the novel is nevertheless deeply satisfying.
