  • Colorado, July 1878. The nationally famous solar eclipse is almost upon the country and a peak overlooking the fledgling town of Elkhorn is one of the centers of attention. In the midst of boisterous and chaotic frontier pre-celebrations, Caleb Marlowe—reluctantly deputized for the coming event—learns that local power broker Judge Horace Patterson is targeted for assassination by agents of a financial magnate.

Caleb's efforts to thwart the plan, however, are complicated when a ghost from his past shows up with the intention of blackmailing him. Elijah Starr, acting for a railroad robber baron, will use any ruthless method at his disposal to clear the way to control a planned rail line to be built through Elkhorn. Caleb is commissioned to bring Starr in to face justice after the assassination attempt, but he has his own burning agenda. Starr is his own father, the man who abused and murdered Caleb's mother.

Caleb swears his mother's death will be avenged and justice will prevail...or he'll die trying.

Caleb Marlowe makes dumb mistakes. In a genre rife with larger-than-life protagonists who can do no wrong, James (a pseudonym for Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick) allows the main character in Bullets and Silver to screw up. It's refreshing to wince when he gets distracted on horseback or fails to notice an inevitable double-cross. Set in 1878, in Elkhorn, Colorado, a few weeks before a media-hyped solar eclipse, Caleb agrees to serve as the bodyguard to a powerful local judge. Later, he volunteers to hunt down the criminal mastermind behind an assassination attempt and its subsequent coverup--but only because the mission will give him a chance to settle a long-simmering vendetta. The population of Elkhorn includes the regular cast of characters: a brilliant doctor, a feisty love interest, two mischievous tweens, a kindly sheriff, and the ornery town drunk. Unique to the second in the Caleb Marlowe series is an emotional secondary plot that champions the rights of Chinese Americans following the San Francisco Riot of 1877, making this book a timely tale.
