In The Bloody Mary, author Brian Bartels—beverage director for the beloved West Village restaurants Jeffrey's Grocery, Joseph Leonard, Fedora, Perla, and Bar Sardine—delves into the fun history of this classic drink.(Did Hemingway create it, as legend suggests? Or was it an ornery Parisian bartender?)

More than 50 eclectic recipes, culled from top bartenders around the country, will have drinkers thinking outside the vodka box and taking garnishes to a whole new level.

For many, a weekend brunch just isn't complete without a Bloody Mary. Bartels, a 20-year veteran bartender, has collected over 50 recipes for one of the most popular cocktails ever invented. Some are classics, some are precursors, and some take the Bloody Mary to new and modern heights. In addition, Bartels delves into the history of the drink and its mysterious and much-debated origins. Using recipes from bars and restaurants all over the globe, almost every iconic ingredient is represented and substituted. From the "original" cocktail (made with vodka, tomato juice, and lemon) to variations on the base alcohol using Old Pepper (rye whisky) to a tomato-less Bunny Mary (carrot juice), there's something for everyone. Nice touches include credits for each creator (when known), informative head notes, and suggested garnishes for each drink. VERDICT Entertaining and informative, this is a fun book for all cocktail enthusiasts. Fair warning: cravings for a hit of booze, tomato, and spice are likely--preferably alongside some eggs benedict.--Devon Thomas, Chelsea, MI
